UEFA Champions League: Borussia Dortmund faces biggest week in season so far
In advance of Friday’s “special game” against title rivals RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic stated on Thursday that his team is entering the biggest week of the season thus far.
Terzic urged the home crowd to “be louder than before,” claiming that “this week will likely be the most significant one for us so far” in the current campaign.
Before travelling to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, where they now hold a 1-0 lead over Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16, Dortmund play Leipzig on Friday.
The following Saturday, Dortmund will visit arch rivals Schalke, who have not lost in five games despite being in last position.
Dortmund is second on goal differential and shares points with leader Bayern Munich. Fourth-place Leipzig is four points behind.
Dortmund was defeated 3-0 by Leipzig earlier in the season, but Terzic believed his team, which is presently unbeaten in nine games, had the ability to reverse the outcome.
“In the first leg, Leipzig was very aggressive and created a lot of danger with their speed.
“But since then we have often done better, for example in Leverkusen.
“We want to take the intensity, toughness and the goal threat of the last few weeks with us.”
Sebastien Haller, who is battling testicular cancer, was urged by Terzic to “reward himself more regularly” by scoring goals.
“The fact that he is trouble-free and in good health is the nicest thing of all. He’s on a pretty fantastic road, and we just hope he scores more often to reward himself for it.”
Haller, who battled cancer for six months before making a January comeback, has one goal and one assist.
Terzic stated that wing back Julian Ryerson would make his game-time comeback after an eye injury.
Karim Adeyemi and Youssoufa Moukoko, two injured strikers, are “making clear steps forward,” according to the manager, but they won’t be ready for the Leipzig game.
The nine-match winning streak that Dortmund is currently on features seven league contests.
If Dortmund wins against Leipzig, they will match the record of eight straight victories set by Jürgen Klopp during the 2011–12 Bundesliga and German Cup winning seasons for Dortmund.
