Ashes 2023: England stick with Bairstow for fourth Test, retain unchanged squad
England has announced the same 14-player squad for the fourth Ashes Test, which will be played at Old Trafford from July 19.
There were calls to drop wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow, who has not been in good form with either bat or gloves, and bring in Ben Foakes. However, Bairstow has been retained.
Fast bowler Ollie Robinson, who left the field with a back spasm on day one of the third Ashes Test and missed the majority of that match, has also been retained in the squad.
England is considering whether to bring back James Anderson for the fourth Ashes Test, which will be played at Old Trafford. Anderson missed the third Test at Headingley due to injury, but he is now fit and could return to the team.
Josh Tongue is another option for England, as he took five wickets at Lord’s in the second Test. Tongue is a young bowler who is still developing, but he has shown promise and could be a good option for England in the fourth Test.
The decision of whether to play Anderson or Tongue will likely come down to how the pitches are at Old Trafford. If the pitches are helpful for fast bowlers, then Anderson is the obvious choice. However, if the pitches are flatter, then Tongue could be a better option.
England won the third Test by three wickets to leave the series tied at 2-1. The fourth Test will be a crucial match, and England will need to make the right decision about their bowling lineup.
England squad for the fourth Ashes Test: Ben Stokes (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonathan Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
