In a thrilling ICC World Cup 2023 match against South Africa at Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens, Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli made history on Sunday, and what better day to do so than on his 35th birthday. Kohli’s stunning performance in the match led to a flurry of records and milestones that have left cricket fans in awe.

Kohli’s remarkable century in the match not only helped India secure a crucial victory but also allowed him to equal the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) with a total of 49 centuries. This achievement cements Kohli’s status as one of the greatest ODI batsmen in the history of the game.

The 35-year-old batting sensation didn’t stop there. He also became the second-highest run-scorer in ODIs on home soil, trailing only behind Tendulkar. Kohli’s consistency and ability to perform in different conditions have made him a cricketing icon.

What’s more, Kohli reached a milestone of 119 scores of 50 or more in ODI cricket, surpassing the great Kumar Sangakkara’s previous record of 118. While Kohli is in second place in this category, the ultimate record-holder is still Sachin Tendulkar, who boasts an astounding 145 half-centuries or better in ODIs.

In the context of the ongoing Men’s ODI World Cup, Kohli’s feats are equally impressive. He moved past Kumar Sangakkara to become the third-highest run-scorer in the history of the tournament. This accomplishment places him in an elite group, with only Sachin Tendulkar and Australia’s Ricky Ponting ahead of him in the list of World Cup run-getters.

Additionally, Virat Kohli became the 17th batter to amass 500 or more runs in a Men’s ODI World Cup, an exclusive club in which he is only the third Indian, following the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma. His consistent and prolific performances in World Cup events further underline his stature as one of the finest cricketers in the modern era.
