Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan’s newly appointed team director, has provided details about his conversations with former cricket players Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim.

Cricket fans around the world were taken aback by Amir’s sudden retirement in 2020, at the age of 28, as he chose to end a career that had been both praised and controversial.

According to Hafeez, he personally spoke with Amir and encouraged him to play domestic cricket if he wanted to play for Pakistan once more.

“I called Mohammad Amir myself and said that if you want to play for Pakistan, you should take your retirement back and you should play domestic cricket.

If you perform well, you will be selected for the Pakistan team. Once you come into the team, I assure you that you will be given equal opportunities like others. However, he said that he has moved on in his life and his priorities have changed in life, which we have to respect,” Hafeez said.

Amir reaffirmed his retirement during a media appearance earlier this year, saying he thought it was time for the next generation to step forward.

“I have retired now, how am I hopeful for my return? If I hadn’t retired, I could have said that I am very hopeful, but now I have retired. Now I have grown old, and there are youngsters in the team,” Amir had said.

After an outstanding eight-year career, Wasim also unexpectedly announced last week that he was retiring from international cricket.

Hafeez disclosed that he spoke with Wasim face-to-face, pressing him to think about signing a central contract. But, after considering the offer, Wasim informed Hafeez that he would not be able to make the New Zealand series and, just two days later, formally announced his retirement.

“I called Imad Wasim myself and said that he is in my plans for the Pakistan team and he should serve Pakistan cricket. I asked him for his availability and he said that he will think about it and will let me know. After two days, he messaged me saying that he was not available for the New Zealand series. After another two days, Imad Wasim announced his retirement,” Hafeez said.

“I acknowledge his services for Pakistan cricket and wish him well for the future,” he added.

It is noteworthy to note that many were taken aback by Wasim’s retirement, given that the left-handed all-rounder is still in excellent physical form and played effectively in Pakistan’s most recent Twenty20 International series against New Zealand.

During the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 8, he was among the top players as well. The left-handed batter scored 404 runs in 10 innings at a remarkable average of 134.66 and struck out 170.46 while also claiming nine wickets with the ball.

Rashid Latif, a former captain of Pakistan, earlier urged Wasim to rethink his decision to retire, claiming that he is the best spinner in the nation.

In a post on X, Rashid Latif called Imad an efficient player and requested Mohammad Hafeez, Team Director, to bring the all-round player back.
