West Indies cricketer Sunil Narine has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of a career that spanned several formats of the game.

The 35-year-old spinner had not played for the West Indies in over four years, making this announcement a significant moment for fans of the sport.

Narine, known for his remarkable skills in T20 cricket, bows out as the fourth-highest wicket-taker for the West Indies in T20 Internationals, with an impressive tally of 52 wickets in 51 matches. He also had a notable presence in One Day Internationals (ODIs) with 92 wickets to his name and briefly featured in Test cricket, securing 21 wickets in just six appearances.

One of the highlights of Narine’s international career was his crucial role in the West Indies’ victory in the 2012 T20 World Cup. His exceptional performance during the tournament, including a stellar 3-9 in the final against Sri Lanka, contributed to his team’s successful title defense.

Throughout his career, Narine faced various challenges, including injuries, inconsistent form, and the need to rectify his bowling action. These factors limited his international appearances, with his last T20I match dating back to 2019, despite calls for his inclusion in the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups.

Narine’s Test career, although promising, was relatively short-lived, with only six appearances. He managed to match his one-day international record with two six-wicket hauls. His last Test match was in 2013, while his last ODI appearance was in 2016.

In a heartfelt message on social media, Narine expressed his gratitude to his fans, peers, and loved ones who had supported him throughout his cricketing journey. He particularly acknowledged his family, especially his father, for their unwavering support and love.

Narine also revealed that he would be retiring from domestic 50-over cricket. He expressed his love for representing Trinidad & Tobago, his home country, and mentioned his desire to add another title by winning the current Super50 Cup. Despite retiring from international and domestic 50-over cricket, Narine affirmed his commitment to continue playing in various T20 leagues around the world.

Sunil Narine’s retirement marks the end of an era in West Indies cricket and the conclusion of a career that saw him leave an indelible mark in the world of T20 cricket. His contributions to the sport and his memorable performances will be cherished by cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
