In a press conference on Monday, newly-appointed Chief Selector of the Pakistan cricket team, Wahab Riaz, provided crucial injury updates on key pacers Naseem Shah, Mohammad Hasnain, and Ihsanullah ahead of the Test series against Australia. Riaz also unveiled the 18-man squad for the upcoming series, set to commence on December 14 in Perth.

Naseem Shah, who sustained a shoulder injury during the Asia Cup 2023 and subsequently missed the ICC World Cup, is showing signs of improvement. Riaz mentioned that the young pacer is expected to bowl at 50-60% capacity after three weeks.

Mohammad Hasnain, dealing with elbow issues, has started running and sprinting, with the resumption of bowling last week. However, he will require a couple of weeks to gradually build up his workload.

Ihsanullah, also struggling with elbow problems, is still undergoing rehabilitation, and his return to the playing XI is yet to be confirmed.

Shan Masood has been appointed as the captain for the Test series, leading a squad that includes Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, among others.

The squad is set to assemble in Rawalpindi on November 22 for a training camp, scheduled to run until November 28 at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. The team will then depart for Australia on November 30 from Lahore.

Several additional players have been invited to feature in the training camp, including Arshad Iqbal, Kashif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Shahnawaz Dahani, Usama Mir, and Usman Qadir.

However, pacer Haris Rauf has declined to travel to Australia, citing fitness concerns, despite assurances from the PCB regarding workload management.

The schedule for Pakistan’s Test tour of Australia is as follows:

  • First Test: December 14-18, Perth Stadium
  • Second Test: December 26-30, Melbourne Cricket Ground

The cricketing community eagerly awaits the series, anticipating the return of key players and the performance of the selected squad under the leadership of Shan Masood.
