The German Football League (DFL) faced criticism on Friday after supporters threw chocolate coins at a Bundesliga game, forcing a pause. The DFL hopes to raise $1 billion by selling a portion of the broadcast rights next year.

This week, German first and second league football teams opted to permit an investor to acquire a share in the media rights company. This move comes as European leagues are considering broadcasting agreements as a means of enhancing revenue and expanding their global presence.

In order to sell media rights for the German market for 2025–2029, the DFL will probably execute an agreement with the investor by the end of March, valued at between 900 million and 1 billion euros ($1.09 billion).

Groups of supporters in Germany have declared that they will be opposing the DFL’s decision to sell to outside investors. One such protest is scheduled for this weekend’s games, and it will last for 12 minutes silently after kickoff.

At Friday’s 2-2 Bundesliga match between Werder Bremen and Borussia Moenchengladbach, supporters expressed their anger by waving placards. After the silent protest was over, Gladbach’s supporters tossed chocolate coins covered in gold foil onto the field.

The game was stopped for five minutes in the first half with Werder leading 1-0 as stadium workers and officials cleared the field.

Following the restart on Friday, Rocco Reitz scored twice to give Gladbach, the home team, the lead. However, Marvin Ducksch’s equalizer in the 76th minute gave Werder a share of the points.

With 17 points from 15 games, Gladbach is two points ahead of Werder in 12th position in the rankings.
