Pakistan has been awarded the privilege to host the Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled to take place in February and March, by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

As of right now, the plans only include hosting matches inside Pakistan. A decision on this issue will be made in due order, though, considering the expectation that the Indian government will be reluctant to allow the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to send the Indian team to Pakistan.

The vice chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board, Khalid Al Zarooni, and the head of the PCB management committee, Zaka Ashraf, recently had a chat, however they did not expressly discuss the Champions Trophy. The UAE has stated that it will always cooperate with Pakistan in spite of this.

There is a chance that some Champions Trophy matches will be moved to the United Arab Emirates if India decides not to send a team. Even so, the ICC would have to cover the extra costs, and the tournament structure could need to be changed.

It is interesting to note that although Pakistan had been granted hosting rights for the Champions Trophy by the ICC earlier, the official agreement was only finalized this past Friday after a protracted standoff. Legal counsel was sought after the previous PCB management committee voiced concerns based on ICC records. A solution to the issue remained difficult even when ICC Chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice visited Pakistan in May.

Pakistan’s position is clear: the ICC should refrain from taking unilateral action if any nation claims security concerns as justification for not sending a squad. Rather, a thorough assessment should be carried out in collaboration with an impartial security organization. This requirement has been met by the ICC.
