Mitchell Starc, an Australian pacer, signed with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday during the IPL 2024 auctions for a staggering INR 24.75 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history.

For the highly sought-after Australian pacer, KKR and Gujrat Titans (GT) engaged in a protracted bidding war that the former ultimately prevailed in.

In the IPL, Starc outlasted his fellow teammate Pat Cummins to claim the title of most expensive player. After a fierce bidding war between Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Hyderabad for the right to captain the 2023 World Cup, the 30-year-old was eventually signed by Sunrises Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 20.5 crore. He is also expected to lead SRH.

That was the first time the IPL auction’s 20-crore threshold had been broken.

In addition to his ability to perform with the ball, Cummins also possesses leadership qualities that set him apart from many other cricket players worldwide. One of the reasons SRH paid INR 20.5 crore for the 30-year-old was because they felt he had the kind of profile that they wanted.

The Australian smashed the record for most expensive player held by English bowler Sam Curran. Punjab Kings purchased Curran for 18.50 crore at the IPL 2023 auction.

The 30-year-old inked a contract worth INR 6.8 crore to join his countryman Travis Head, the hero of the 2023 World Cup final, at SRH.

Not to be overlooked, Cummins led Australia to incredible triumph in 2023. After defeating India in June 2023 to win the World Test Championship 2021–2023 cycle, the Australians crushed the Blues in the World Cup final, with Head scoring 137 off 120 balls.

Notably, Cummins withdrew from the 2023 Indian Premier League, citing workload as the reason given by the Kolkata Knight Riders.

In the meantime, the 2024 Indian Premier League would be an excellent way to get ready for the World Cup, which will take place in the United States and the West Indies in June of that year.
