Tennis player Anis Ghorbel, a native of Tunisia, was found guilty on Friday of match-fixing and sentenced to three years of suspension from all sports.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) found Ghorbel, who peaked at number 479 in 2016, guilty of violating four anti-corruption rules and fined him a whopping $20,000.

“The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) can today confirm that Tunisian tennis player Anis Ghorbel has been suspended from the sport for a period of three years and fined $20,000 for four breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP),” the ITIA said in a press release.

“The sanction is linked to a recently concluded criminal case involving a match-fixing syndicate in Belgium. Collaboration between the ITIA and Belgian authorities led to a five-year custodial sentence for the leader of the syndicate, Grigor Sargsyan,” the statement added.

During a hearing in December 2023, the 34-year-old refuted all of the accusations made against him, but he was found guilty of failing to disclose dishonest tactics, permitting wagering on game outcomes, and planning to influence a match’s outcome or any part of it.

The tennis player’s three-year ban will expire on January 3, 2027.

Ghorbel won one ITF singles championship and 26 ITF doubles titles, although he never took part in or won a Grand Slam.
