Aaqib Javed, a former cricketer from Pakistan, has voiced his concerns about the coaching standards and the current situation in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Aqib pointed out the unprofessionalism in the PCB’s coach recruitment process, saying, “It’s not about jealousy, it’s about mindset. If you look at the past 10-12 years, apart from Mickey Arthur, PCB has not hired any professional coach. In the entire world, when there is an advertisement for coaching, the first requirement is usually a Level 3 plus qualification, followed by 4-5 years of international experience.”

He further criticized the PCB’s approach, stating, “PCB hires a person first and then the advertisement comes according to that person. So when you don’t correct your advertisement, then anyone can apply, then what is the criteria?”

Aaqib emphasized that hiring decisions should be merit-based, with qualifications and experience being the primary considerations. He added, “I have always said that you should create merit and make decisions based on it. Without any qualification, without any experience, if a person has not coached for a single day, you hire him as head coach. This is not criticism, this is saying that you should do your job professionally.”

Regarding the ninth season of the PSL, Aaqib, who is the head coach of Lahore Qalandars, expressed his dissatisfaction with the recently concluded season, citing shortcomings in cricketing standards, pitch quality, and crowd involvement. He concluded, “This PSL season was not commendable in any aspect. If you look at the standard of cricket, if you look at the standard of pitches, if you look at the crowd involvement, then this time you didn’t see anything.”

It’s noteworthy that Lahore Qalandars, under Aaqib’s coaching, had a disappointing run in the recent PSL. They lost eight out of ten matches, won only one, and one match was abandoned due to bad weather.
