During the IPL 2024 match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday, a unique incident occurred when Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) hugged Gautam Gambhir of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Kohli, who opened for RCB and remained on the pitch until the end, scored 83 runs off 59 balls, helping his team to a total of 182-6. The encounter between Kohli and Gambhir, who was on the field to guide his team during a strategic timeout, happened in the 16th over.
Upon seeing Gambhir, Kohli greeted him with a handshake, followed by a hug. This friendly exchange brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
This interaction reminded spectators of their past conflict during the IPL 2023 match between RCB and Gambhir’s former team, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), which had escalated into a heated argument.
Kohli’s gesture also brought back memories of when he hugged Naveen-ul-Haq of Afghanistan in IPL 2023 and appealed to the crowd to stop jeering at him.
In the match, Kohli not only top-scored for his team but also surpassed Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s record of the fourth-highest number of sixes in IPL history. With 241 sixes, Kohli now ranks behind only Chris Gayle (357), Rohit Sharma (261), and AB de Villiers (251).
In the process, he also became the player with the most sixes for RCB, surpassing Gayle. It’s worth noting that Kohli is the only player to have represented a single team, RCB, since the IPL’s inception in 2008, and all his sixes have been scored for them.
Most sixes for RCB in IPL history
Virat Kohli – 241*
Chris Gayle – 239
AB de Villiers – 238
Glenn Maxwell – 67
Faf du Plessis – 50
