The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may need to consider appointing separate coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket, given Shane Watson’s interest solely in limited-overs cricket.

As per local media reports, Watson, the former Australian all-rounder, is reluctant to commit to a full-time presence in Pakistan, which could necessitate the appointment of a separate coach for Test cricket.

It has been reported that Watson has been offered an annual salary of $2 million by the PCB. If the contract is signed, Watson could potentially become the highest-paid coach in Pakistan cricket history.

Watson is seriously contemplating the offer and might accept the role when formally approached by the PCB.

The PCB, led by Mohsin Naqvi, is keen on assembling a robust coaching staff for the cricket team.

To fill the coaching vacancy in time for the upcoming home T20I series against New Zealand, the PCB is also contemplating the appointment of local coaches along with foreign consultants, in case the contract with Watson is not finalized before the series.

The five-match T20I series between Pakistan and New Zealand is set to commence from April 18.

It’s worth noting that Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, and Andrew Puttick, who were reassigned to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore following a portfolio change in November 2023, vacated their respective positions in January this year.

In April 2023, Arthur was appointed as the Director of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, while Bradburn was brought on board as the head coach of the Pakistan national men’s side earlier last year. Former South Africa cricketer Puttick served as the batting coach since April 2023.

The decision was mutually agreed upon by all parties involved, as per the PCB.
