Novak Djokovic addressed retirement speculation after winning the Olympic gold medal with a 7-6(4), 7-6(2) victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final on Sunday.

At 37, Djokovic became the oldest Olympic gold medalist in men’s singles with his straight-sets win over the Spaniard.

The Serb joined Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, and Steffi Graf in completing the “Golden Slam,” having won all four Grand Slams and an Olympic gold medal.

When asked if he plans to retire now that he has achieved this milestone, Djokovic made it clear that he intends to continue playing and aims to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“Look, I still, I want to play in Los Angeles. I enjoy playing for my country in Olympic Games particularly and Davis Cup. It’s something that, being part of a team…”

“He’s [coach Viktor Troicki] making fun of my calendar goals, playing in Los Angeles. I don’t know if he’s laughing because he thinks it’s unrealistic or he’s like, okay, another four years with this guy.”

Djokovic previously won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but faced early exits at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games before losing the bronze-medal match at Tokyo 2020.

After losing to Alcaraz in the 2024 Wimbledon final and undergoing knee surgery, Djokovic avenged his defeat with this Olympic win in Paris.

Djokovic has now secured 99 singles titles, including 24 Grand Slams — 10 Australian Open, seven Wimbledon, four US Open, and three Roland Garros — and an Olympic medal.

He is the most decorated player in tennis history, surpassing Roger Federer, who retired with 20 Grand Slams, and Rafael Nadal, who has 22 majors and is nearing retirement.
