Argentine footballer’s family killed in Venezuela earthquakes

Wife and two children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo have died.

The wife and two children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo have died after strong twin earthquakes hit Venezuela, his team said Sunday.

Trejo, who plays for Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, a second-division club in Venezuela, searched for his wife, Yanina, and children, Aaron and Ainhoa, in the rubble for three days before rescue teams recovered their bodies, according to U.S. media reports.

“Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children,” the club said in an Instagram post accompanied by a photo of the family.

Trejo, 38, was at a training camp in Caracas when earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Wednesday evening.

He immediately returned to his home in La Guaira, the area worst affected by the disaster, and arrived to what was described as a horrific scene, his brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles told.

“He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been,” Ardiles said.

Authorities in Venezuela said Sunday that nearly 1,500 people have died and tens of thousands are still missing.
