Enzo Fernandez, the World Cup champion, was purchased by Chelsea from Benfica for a British record-breaking 121 million euros ($131 million).
The 22-year-old midfielder’s performances during Argentina’s triumphant World Cup campaign in Qatar earned him the title of tournament’s Best Young Player.
The £106.8 million price tag surpasses the £100 million that Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021, which was the previous high.
Fernandez only signed up with the dominant Portuguese club in July of last year for a rumoured sum of about £10 million.
