In a shock that has sent ripples through the tennis world, 24-year-old Jack Draper pulled off a career-defining upset at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating five-time champion Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in a gripping, edge-of-your-seat contest to reach the quarter-finals.

Competing in only his second ATP Tour event since last August, Draper delivered under pressure like a seasoned veteran.

Serving for the match at 5-4 in the decider, the British left-hander faced a tense moment as Djokovic clawed back, but Draper’s composure never wavered. He dominated the tie-break to seal one of the most remarkable wins of his young career.

“I came out determined to problem-solve, stay positive, and execute at my best,” Draper said in his post-match interview. “I’m proud of how I regrouped. Beating Novak gives me immense confidence and shows what I can achieve at the highest level.”

The match was a showcase of endurance, precision, and sheer willpower. Both players engaged in relentless baseline rallies, with a stunning 26-shot exchange in the opening game of the decider earning a standing ovation.

Djokovic, visibly fatigued at times, struggled to keep pace with Draper, who grew stronger as the match progressed, dictating play with increasing authority and refusing to yield under pressure.

For Draper, the victory was more than a win it was an emotional milestone after months away from the tour due to an arm injury. “Returning to the court has been very emotional,” he admitted. “To face Novak, someone I’ve admired since childhood, and come out on top, is something I’ll never forget.”

With this victory, Draper now evens his head-to-head record with Djokovic at 1-1, their first meeting since Wimbledon 2021. Last season, Draper reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 before an injury forced him to end the year early.

He returned last month in the Davis Cup against Norway and at the ATP 500 event in Dubai, showing signs of his formidable form.

Draper’s next challenge will be two-time finalist Daniil Medvedev, who defeated American Alex Michelsen 6-2, 6-4. Medvedev holds a 1-0 record against Draper from their previous encounter in Rome two years ago.

Djokovic, meanwhile, departs Indian Wells aiming to regroup after missing the chance to join Roger Federer (13) and Rafael Nadal (12) as the only men to reach 10 quarter-finals at the tournament.

The 38-year-old leaves California with a 7-2 season record, including a runner-up finish at the Australian Open, where he fell to World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.
