TCL Technology and Alcatel, two international tech giants have shown interest in Pakistan’s mobile phone industry.

The Chinese telecom giant, TCL with Airlink is reportedly planning to invest in Pakistan’s mobile phone industry, and on the other hand. the French mobile phone manufacturer, Alcatel is also reportedly showing interest in entering the Pakistani market.

The import of mobile phones through Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBs) has generated Rs. 54 billion over the last year, as per Pakistan Customs. Furthermore, DIRBs has also attracted much foreign investment in this sector.

To control the use of smuggled devices in the country, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Pakistan Customs had introduced the DIRBs.

It should be mentioned here that currently, 17 mobile manufacturers are operating in Pakistan. The present government has also facilitated growth in this sector. A mobile phone manufacturing policy was introduced in May 2020 in Pakistan. Local manufacturers of exports of mobile phones were given a 3 percent allowance under the policy and locally assembled sets were exempted from 4 percent withholding tax on domestic sales.
