Final Fantasy XVI was announced in 2020 with a brutal teaser that contrasted with the series’ normal cheerful and uplifting tone.

The game’s creative director is the beloved Naoki Yoshida, giving fans of the genre hope that the single-player game would be more like the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV (which Yoshida also oversees) than the critically praised but nonetheless excellent Final Fantasy XV.
After the pandemic forced a six-month delay in the game’s release, Yoshida promised that news about the game will appear in spring 2022. As part of that promise, Yoshida indicated that Square Enix will do press interviews in the coming months in order to divulge even more information about Final Fantasy XVI.
