It’s been a long time coming, but Internet Explorer, one of the most widely used browsers, finally reaches its conclusion. After 27 years of service, Microsoft decides to retire its ageing browser.

Internet Explorer will be phased out fully on June 15 and will be unusable beyond that date. The outdated browser will be totally replaced with the current Microsoft Edge, which is based on Chromium.

Internet Explorer was first released in 1995 as part of the Windows 95 add-on package. Later on, the browser became entirely free.

With a market share of 95 percent in 2003, the nearly three-decade-old internet browser reached its peak usage. However, after competitors developed with improved user interfaces, smoother performance, and speedier functionality, it was unable to keep its position.

Internet Explorer is now primarily used to set up other browsers. With the recent release of Windows 11, it appears that Microsoft finally chooses to retire the antiquated browser.

According to Microsoft Edge program manager Sean Lyndersay, “The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 lies in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a quicker, more secure, and more contemporary browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it also addresses a crucial concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications.”
