Alphabet Inc’s autonomous driving unit, Waymo, has officially applied to the California Public Utilities Commission, signaling its intent to expand its driverless service to Los Angeles. The move follows Waymo’s extensive operations in San Francisco, and if granted, the license would allow the company to fully deploy its autonomous fleet in California’s largest city.
Currently, Waymo is in the testing phase in Los Angeles, providing rides by invitation only. The application to the utilities commission represents a significant step towards the widespread availability of Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service in the bustling metropolis. The commission has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.
Waymo, in a statement on social media platform X, expressed its commitment to collaborating with Los Angeles policymakers, first responders, and community organizations. However, specific details regarding the launch date of the driverless service in Los Angeles were not disclosed.
Earlier this month, Waymo announced its plans to conduct tests of fully autonomous passenger cars without a human driver on Phoenix, Arizona’s freeways. The company, which already offers rides in the Phoenix metropolitan area, also has ambitions to expand its operations to Austin, Texas.
It’s worth noting that Waymo faced regulatory challenges last year, leading to a delay in its efforts to develop commercial autonomous trucking technology. The autonomous driving sector as a whole has come under scrutiny, with General Motors’ Cruise driverless car unit pausing supervised and manual car trips in the U.S. following an accident that resulted in the suspension of driverless vehicle operations.
As Waymo sets its sights on Los Angeles, the company’s move reflects the ongoing expansion of autonomous driving technology across major urban centers, emphasizing the growing importance of regulatory approvals and community partnerships in this transformative industry.
