OpenAI launches AI video generator Sora

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has unveiled its new AI video generator, Sora. The tool, launched on Monday, allows users to create short, high-definition videos up to 22 seconds long.

Sora Turbo, an upgraded version, offers faster video creation compared to the earlier model previewed in February.

Sora enters a competitive space alongside similar tools from tech giants like Google and Meta. However, none have yet matched the impact of ChatGPT, which transformed AI tools when it launched two years ago. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the technology is still developing, promising significant improvements in the future.

The tool is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers but is currently not accessible in Europe or the UK. Altman assured users that efforts are underway to expand availability to those regions.

Free-tier users can create up to 50 standard-definition videos monthly, with options to use different aspect ratios and add existing media to their creations.

To address concerns about misuse, OpenAI has included safeguards like visible watermarks and metadata verification. For now, Sora restricts the generation of videos featuring real people to combat deepfake risks.

Despite the excitement, Sora has received mixed feedback. Early users noted challenges with realism and complex video sequences. During the launch event, an OpenAI team member advised users not to yet expect feature-film-level results.

Sora’s launch reflects OpenAI’s commitment to advancing AI tools while addressing ethical concerns and expanding creative possibilities for users worldwide.
