The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition from TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, challenging a law requiring the platform to be sold by January 19 or face a nationwide ban.

The case will be argued on January 10, following months of uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the US.

TikTok, ByteDance, and several users filed an urgent plea to halt the looming ban. However, the court has not immediately responded to their request for temporary relief, according to Reuters.

The law, passed by Congress in April and signed by former President Joe Biden, cites national security concerns. The Justice Department claims TikTok’s vast database, including American users’ private messages and locations, could enable content manipulation by a foreign entity.

TikTok has refuted these allegations, maintaining it poses no national security threat. The platform argues that the law violates free speech rights under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

The petitioners have requested the Supreme Court to temporarily block the law, emphasizing the potential harm it could cause to users and content creators across the nation.

As the legal battle unfolds, the case has become a focal point in debates over privacy, security, and the regulation of foreign-owned tech companies in the US.
