ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a cybersecurity advisory, urging users to update their Google Chrome browsers immediately after the discovery of two severe security flaws.

According to PTA, these vulnerabilities could allow remote attackers to execute malicious code on affected systems. The flaws impact all Chrome versions prior to the latest emergency update across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.

The first vulnerability, labeled CVE-2024-4671, enables attackers to bypass Chrome’s sandbox environment, potentially granting them unauthorized access to users’ devices through specially designed web pages. The second flaw, CVE-2024-4761, affects Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine, leading to an out-of-bounds write, which could result in arbitrary code execution. Both security risks are classified as high-severity and can be exploited through compromised websites.

To counter these threats, PTA has advised all users to update Google Chrome to version 124.0.6367.207 or later.

Users can check for updates by navigating to Settings > About Chrome, and then restarting their browser if an update is available. The advisory also recommends enabling automatic updates to ensure continued protection from emerging cyber threats.

Additionally, PTA has advised users to remain cautious and monitor their systems for any suspicious activity that could indicate a security breach. Organizations and individuals encountering security incidents related to these vulnerabilities are encouraged to report them through the PTA CERT Portal or via email.
