The Punjab government is preparing to launch an e-taxi scheme that will offer interest-free loans to drivers, aiming to transform urban transport across the province with sustainable electric vehicles (EVs). In the pilot phase, the government will deploy 26 EVs on the roads and support the initiative with targeted training and facilitation programs.
Under the Punjab e-taxi scheme, the Punjab Small Industries Corporation will offer interest-free loans to support qualified drivers and individuals in acquiring electric taxis. This financial assistance aims to promote green transportation and encourage self-employment without placing an interest burden on the beneficiaries.
The government has finalized the initial implementation plan, according to available details. It will establish a dedicated Centre of Excellence for EVs and e-Taxis at the Government College of Technology, Railway Road, Lahore. The center will provide training, manage registration, and conduct screening processes to ensure transparency and merit-based participation.
The program requires applicants to have at least a matriculation-level education and a valid LTV driving license. Authorities will provide selected participants with training in EV driving and charging station management before issuing them e-taxis.
The Punjab government launched this initiative as part of its broader strategy to address rising fuel costs, reduce environmental pollution, and create livelihood opportunities through green innovation. Officials believe that offering interest-free loans along with skill-building programs will motivate young people to choose electric vehicles as a viable career path.
If the scheme succeeds, the government may expand it to include more cities and additional types of vehicles. As the pilot phase begins, the public is closely watching Punjab’s commitment to clean mobility and inclusive economic growth.
