WhatsApp announces new update allowing Android users to reserve Usernames soon
WhatsApp is getting ready to roll out one of its biggest privacy updates, the option to connect with usernames instead of phone numbers. Since its launch, WhatsApp has always required users to register and connect using their phone numbers. Now, it’s catching up with messaging apps like Telegram and Signal by letting users choose unique usernames.
In the latest Android beta version, users can already see a new setting that allows them to reserve a username. This early access gives people a chance to claim their preferred names before the feature becomes available to everyone. WhatsApp says it will keep the process fair so that no one can unfairly grab popular usernames early.
The app has also shared a few rules for creating usernames: they must include at least one letter, can’t start with “www,” and may only contain lowercase letters, numbers, periods, or underscores.
This feature will make it easier and safer for users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. It’s especially useful for people who value privacy or for businesses that want to communicate securely with customers.
WhatsApp hasn’t announced an official release date yet, but the feature is in active development. A broader rollout is expected in the coming months as testing continues and the platform prepares for launch.
