SpaceX has agreed to acquire Anysphere, the company behind the AI-powered coding platform Cursor, in a $60 billion all-stock deal, according to reports.
The deal marks a major strategic expansion for SpaceX into artificial intelligence, reflecting its growing ambitions beyond aerospace into advanced software and enterprise technology. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.
Cursor has emerged as one of the leading AI coding platforms, helping developers streamline programming through intelligent code generation, editing, and automation. Strong adoption among enterprise users has driven its rapid commercial growth.
The acquisition also highlights a significant milestone for Pakistan’s tech ecosystem, as Cursor was co-founded by Pakistani-born entrepreneur Sualeh Asif.
Originally from Karachi, Asif studied at Nixor College before joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he co-founded Anysphere with three fellow students. He also represented Pakistan at the International Mathematical Olympiad between 2016 and 2018.
SpaceX’s latest move underscores its deepening focus on artificial intelligence, following earlier involvement in AI-related projects. The company is increasingly positioning itself within the fast-growing market for developer-focused AI tools, one of the most competitive segments in the tech industry.
Reports suggest Cursor has recorded strong financial momentum, with annualized business-to-business revenue estimated at around $2.6 billion, reflecting robust enterprise demand and investor confidence.
Prior to the acquisition, SpaceX had already established a working relationship with Cursor through an option-based agreement tied to its valuation. The latest development formalizes that arrangement through a full equity-based transaction.
The deal will be completed entirely in SpaceX shares, with no cash component involved from recent fundraising activity.
Cursor has attracted backing from leading global investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, Nvidia, Google, Accel, and the OpenAI Startup Fund, highlighting strong confidence in its growth trajectory.
Following the acquisition, SpaceX is expected to integrate Cursor’s technology into its broader AI ecosystem, potentially aligning it with xAI-related tools to enhance automation and software development capabilities.
The deal marks a defining moment in SpaceX’s evolving AI strategy while bringing renewed global attention to a Pakistani-origin founder at the center of one of the most high-profile tech acquisitions in recent years.
