At The Android Show XR Edition, Google revealed plans to release its first AI-powered smart glasses in 2026, giving audiences a sneak peek into the new devices and an update on its growing XR ecosystem.
“We are collaborating with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to design stylish, lightweight glasses that are comfortable enough for all-day wear. We are working together on two distinct models, with the first set to arrive next year,” said Google.
Google’s new AI smart glasses come in two variations, each designed to offer unique features and user experiences:
AI Glasses (Screen-Free Assistance):
-
Built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras for hands-free interaction.
-
Provides contextual support and allows users to take photos without needing a screen.
Display AI Glasses:
-
Equipped with an in-lens display for private, real-time information.
-
Offers features like turn-by-turn navigation, live translation captions, and other overlays directly within the user’s line of sight.
Google’s smart glasses are crafted to blend effortlessly into everyday life, providing hands-free AI support for tasks like recalling information or exploring the surroundings. They also include a translation feature to enhance communication.
As part of its broader Android XR expansion, the AI glasses will complement Google’s other XR products, including the Samsung Galaxy XR headset and XREAL’s Project Aura, offering an ideal balance of style, functionality, and immersive experiences.
To support the development of augmented experiences, Google has released Developer Preview 3 of the Android XR SDK, providing early partners like Uber and GetYourGuide the tools to create cutting-edge AR experiences for the upcoming AI smart glasses.
