Samsung has announced three new foldable phones at its annual Galaxy Unpacked event: the Galaxy Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8. They offer new sizes, new features, brighter screens and more advanced cameras than their predecessors.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the company’s flagship foldable smartphone and the newest addition to the Galaxy Z Fold lineup. Like other Galaxy Z Fold models, it opens like a book, with a cover display on the outside and a larger screen inside. Its 8-inch inner display offers a viewing area similar to two 6.5-inch screens placed side by side, making it ideal for multitasking.
The inner display has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, making it the brightest screen ever used on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, even brighter than the Galaxy S26 Ultra. It also features an anti-reflective coating to improve visibility in bright sunlight.
Despite its upgrades over the previous Galaxy Z Fold7, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is just 4.1 millimeters thick when unfolded, making it the thinnest Galaxy Z Fold model Samsung has released. For comparison, the iPhone 17 is 7.95 millimeters thick.
Samsung has also introduced a redesigned hinge with new magnets and an improved mechanism, making the phone easier to open while improving its long-term durability.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra features a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. One of the biggest upgrades is the ultrawide camera, which has increased from 12 megapixels on the Galaxy Z Fold7 to 50 megapixels, allowing users to capture landscape photos with greater detail.
The phone also includes Samsung’s ProVisual Engine with advanced application processor (AP) technology for improved Nightography video recording. It also supports the Horizontal Lock feature found on the Galaxy S26 series, helping users record steadier videos by keeping the footage level even when the phone is tilted. In addition, users can apply one of four cinematic presets, such as romance or thriller, to give their videos a more cinematic look.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor, the same chip used in the Galaxy S26 series. It comes with a 5,000 mAh battery that provides up to 27 hours of video playback and can charge to 67% in about 30 minutes.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 offers slightly lower specifications than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra but has a similar foldable design. It is slightly shorter and wider than the flagship model.
Weighing 201 grams, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is the lightest foldable phone in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup.
The phone features a 7.6-inch inner display, which is slightly smaller than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra’s screen. However, it offers the same peak brightness of 3,000 nits and the same anti-reflective coating, making the display easier to see in bright sunlight. Its outer cover screen measures 5.5 inches.
When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is 4.5 millimeters thick, making it slightly thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. It is powered by the same processor, so users can expect similar performance.
The camera system is more basic than the Ultra model. The Galaxy Z Fold8 has two rear cameras, including a wide and an ultrawide lens, both with 50-megapixel sensors, instead of the Ultra’s three-camera setup. Like the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, it also allows users to record video using both the rear and selfie cameras at the same time. These recordings can be saved as separate videos or combined into a single video.
The phone also introduces a feature called My FanCam. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically focus on a selected person in a video without requiring manual cropping. Users simply record the video, choose the subject afterward, and the phone zooms in and follows that person throughout the recording. Users can also choose the aspect ratio and share the video directly on social media without additional editing.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a slightly smaller battery than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, but Samsung says it still delivers strong battery life. Its 4,800mAh battery is expected to provide up to 26 hours of video playback and can charge to 63% in about 30 minutes. This allows users to quickly recharge the phone when they are short on time.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip8 features a different design from the Galaxy Z Fold series. It folds vertically, similar to a compact makeup mirror or the classic Motorola Razr phone.
Samsung said the Z Flip8 is the thinnest and lightest Galaxy Z Flip model to date. It measures 6.1 millimeters thick when unfolded, making it 13% thinner than the previous Galaxy Z Flip7, and weighs 180 grams, about 3.9% less than its predecessor.
Its foldable design also allows users to hold the phone like a camcorder while recording videos. The device features a 50-megapixel main camera powered by Samsung’s ProVisual Engine. It also offers improved background blur for selfies and includes the Horizontal Lock feature introduced on the new Galaxy Z Fold models.
The Z Flip8 also includes the new FlexWindow Home feature, which provides a dedicated space for notifications and quick access to apps optimized for the foldable cover screen.
Like Samsung’s other new Galaxy Z phones, the Z Flip8 features an upgraded Now Brief function. The company said it can more intelligently suggest useful actions and provide personalized information based on a user’s schedule and daily activities. Users can also customize the Now Brief cards to suit their preferences.
Samsung said the new phones are designed to make everyday tasks more efficient.
All three new Galaxy Z phones are available for preorder and will begin shipping next month. The Galaxy Z Flip8 starts at £1,100, the Galaxy Z Fold8 at £1,699 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra at £1,899. All models include 256GB of storage as standard. A 512GB version is also available for all three devices, while the two Galaxy Z Fold models are also offered with up to 1TB of storage.
Samsung is also offering six months of free access to Google AI Pro with each new device.
