Zara is stepping boldly into the future of fashion by harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to create dynamic images of models in various outfits, revolutionizing the speed and efficiency of fashion photography.
This move signals a major industry shift with wide-reaching implications for photographers, models, and production teams.
Zara’s AI initiative follows in the footsteps of Swedish rival H&M, which earlier this year introduced AI-generated model clones for marketing purposes, and European online retailer Zalando, which is also accelerating imagery production through AI.
An Inditex spokesperson emphasized that AI is being used only to complement existing creative processes. “We collaborate closely with our models, obtaining consent for any AI edits, and provide compensation equivalent to traditional photo shoots,” the statement read.
Inditex chair Marta Ortega, daughter of founder Amancio Ortega, has long championed fashion photography. Since 2021, her MOP (Marta Ortega Pérez) Foundation gallery in A Coruña has hosted exhibitions showcasing iconic photographers like Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, and Helmut Newton.
Despite the innovation, experts caution that AI could disrupt the fashion ecosystem. Isabelle Doran, CEO of the Association of Photographers in London, warned that AI may reduce opportunities for photographers, models, and production teams, affecting both established professionals and emerging talents striving to make their mark in the industry.
