A 22-year-old woman is accused of holding an online ‘date’ hostage in a £75,000 kidnap and torture plot
A woman is accused of kidnapping and torturing her online “date” while demanding a £75,000 ransom as part of a kidnapping and torture plot.
Valerie Rosario, 22, was part of a group that tortured the kidnapped man for hours before demanding $100,000 (£76,511) in ransom on a FaceTime call to his terrified brother.
According to prosecutors in Manhattan, the victim was found tied up and gagged in the back of a van about 24 hours after he went to the woman’s apartment.
According to the New York Post, Rosario is now facing charges of kidnapping and attempted murder in connection with the sick scheme.
According to prosecutors, Rosario coaxed the man to an address on Marble Hill Avenue in The Bronx, New York, on February 7 after they met on Instagram.
When the man arrived at the apartment around 1 a.m., the torture session began.
He was pistol-whipped by three men who barged into the apartment, court documents said.
According to the court, the victim was stripped and “placed into a bathtub,” where the group doused him with flammable substances and burned him with a flame.
The group allegedly tortured him with a knife, striking him in the legs, back, and body.
Later that morning, they allegedly called his brother and showed him the abuse his brother was subjected to while demanding the ransom, according to the court.
According to the New York Post, the kidnappers allegedly told the brother he needed to “give [them] one thousand dollars” or they would kill their victim.
According to sources, Rosario and the other members of the group allegedly lured the victim to the apartment because they were enticed by the money he displayed on his Instagram account.
The kidnappers moved their victim to a different location after “multiple hours” of torture, according to Assistant District Attorney Andrew Kluger at Rosario’s arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday.
According to Kluger, the man was barely breathing.
He was taken to the hospital and treated for multiple burns and stab wounds on his face, body, back, and legs.
Kluger asked that Rosario be held without bail because she was accused of kidnapping a “complete stranger” and torturing him for 24 hours.
Rosario should be released on her own recognisance, according to defence attorney Raymond Loving, because she lives with her mother and brother.
However, Judge Soma Syed remanded Rosario into custody, citing the seriousness of the charges.
On Tuesday, the case was scheduled to be presented to a grand jury.
Rosario was said to have denied all of the allegations levelled against her.
Vargas and another of the alleged kidnappers were both remanded in custody after being arrested and charged last week.
