St. Petersburg University students applaud imprisoned professor

With Russia’s eight-month invasion of Ukraine, lives in the war-torn country have been shattered. While world leaders continue to urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war, heartbreaking statements made by a Russian TV presenter about drowning Ukrainian children have been universally denounced.

Meanwhile, Denis Skopin, an Associate Professor at Russia’s oldest university in St Petersburg, participated in anti-war protests. The lecturer who was sacked by the university received a standing ovation from his students on his last day at the university.

The uncommon moments were captured on camera and have gone viral on the internet. A young man is seen hugging Skopin in a video published by Ukrainian journalist Matthew Luxmoore. Applause may be heard from students gathered outside the University. They can be heard cheering as he walks away, expressing their respect and love for his brave act.

According to Luxmoore’s tweet, Skopin was imprisoned for 10 days. “Extraordinary moment as students at Russia’s oldest university in St Petersburg applaud and cheer a professor who has been fired for taking part in anti-war protests. Denis Skopin spent 10 days in jail and was given a summons to the military recruitment office.”

According to a Doxa report, Skopin attended an anti-mobilisation event on September 21. Imprisoned Skopin, along with other demonstrators, was convinced to submit a summons to the military registration and recruitment office.

According to the Doxa study, the university’s order dismissing Skopin stated, “the act committed by the employee is immoral and incompatible with the implementation of educational functions and the continuation of this work.”
