The forest department thanked the fishermen for saving two rare dolphin species that were caught in their nets.

Mandapam, Pamban, Uchipulli, Serangotte, Dhanushkodi and other Ramanathapuram regions have trawlers.

Two dolphins, a rare species in the Gulf of Mannar, were caught alive in the fishermen’s net near Ramanathapuram’s lower shore.

Knowing they were unusual, the fishermen separated the other fish and rescued the dolphins. They were released into the water.

The local fishermen filmed the occurrence and uploaded it on social media with the message, “Rare species of fish caught in fishing nets should be safely released back into the sea.” The video is viral.

IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared the video. She posted and commented, “Two dolphins caught in a fishing net in Keelkarai Range, Ramanathapuram District, were rescued and released today. Community engagement’s power. We’ll honour them. DFO Ramnad, kudos.”

Based on this footage, Ramanathapuram forest warden met Keejakarai fisherman and thanked them. The Tamil Nadu forest department promised to reward the fishermen for rescuing endangered marine species.
