Sri Lankans hang on buses and sit in storage midst of fuel shortage
Poverty-stricken Sri Lankans stand in 2-km-long lines for days to get cooking gas and gasoline (1.2 miles). Some people have stopped driving and now ride bikes or take the bus.
Sri Lanka’s financial crisis is worse than problems in the rest of the developing world. The economic collapse has made it hard for regular people to get food, gas, and other things they need, which has led to anger and violence. The disaster in the South Asian island country with 22 million people is caused by bad economic management, the effects of pandemics, and terrorist attacks 2019.
In the middle of this crisis, a video of a red bus full of people in Sri Lanka has been shared on social media. People who couldn’t get on the bus because it was too full and there wasn’t enough gas could be seen hanging from the door and windows. Others could be seen sitting in an open-doored small luggage unit at the back of the bus. Someone on a bike who was following the bus caught it on tape.
Because there isn’t enough fuel, people in Sri Lanka are having such a hard time that they have to risk their lives by taking buses this way. The heartbreaking video was first posted on TikTok, but now it has gone viral and has over 42,000 views on Twitter.
