Early Life of Vince Clarke

On July 3, 1960, in East London, Vincent Martin Clarke was born. Later, he relocated to Basildon, Essex. Clarke began his musical career in the late 1970s, playing in bands such as No Romance in China and The Plan.

Depeche Mode & Yazoo

As a founding member of Depeche Mode in 1980, Clarke worked on songs like “Dreaming of Me” and “Just Can’t Get Enough.” However, he left the band after their debut album. He later joined forces with Alison Moyet to form Yazoo, and the two of them put out two hit albums, including Upstairs at Eric’s, before calling it quits in 1983.

Erasure’s Breakthrough

Together with Andy Bell, Clarke founded Erasure in 1985. With hits like “Sometimes,” their second album, The Circus (1987), was a huge hit. Subsequent albums, The Innocents and Wild!, solidified their status, with hits such as “A Little Respect” and “Chains of Love.” Erasure had over 28 million album sales worldwide and topped the UK charts.

Personal Life of Vince Clarke

Clarke was married to Tracy Hurley Martin, a publicist and producer, with whom he had a son named Oscar. In the midst of Clarke’s long-standing musical success, Tracy tragically lost her life to cancer in early 2024.
