Russia’s Vladimir Putin “signed his own death warrant” with the conflict in Ukraine, according to the wife of an imprisoned opposition legislator.

Vladimir Kara-Murza, a political activist and journalist who has written articles for The Washington Post, was jailed in Moscow in April.

He was charged with “disseminating deliberately false information” about Russia’s military, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in jail under a new legislation established shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February.

According to his wife, Evgenia Kara-Murza, he is now facing a lengthy jail sentence for “calling this war a war.”

Given that her spouse has survived two suspected poisonings, Evgenia Kara-Murza feels he has a right to be concerned about his safety.

She explained why her husband chose to return to Russia while being a permanent resident of the United States, even after the invasion of Ukraine, by saying that “as a Russian leader, he cannot call on people to continue fighting if he himself is somewhere secure.”

According to Evgenia Kara-Murza, Putin’s time is also running out.

She said: “I believe Putin has signed his own death warrant with this war, but he will fall the sooner we end these double standards: at the same time as countries support the Ukrainian people by sending weapons and providing humanitarian aid and imposing sanctions on the Russian economy, they also give Putin billions for oil and gas, which allows him to continue his aggression […] this has to stop because, honestly, it is inexplicable.”
