Russian military have been charged with taking fertiliser, agricultural machinery, sunflower seeds, and grain from Ukrainian farmers in the occupied territories. Tracking of data has been going onto find out where grain that has been stolen is heading.
A few kilometres from the battle lines, a Ukrainian farmer named Dmytro explains how the company he had built up over 25 years was destroyed in just four months by the Russians.
More than 200 farmers whose land is currently held by Russia have been reached. Dmytro was one of the few willing to meet with us; we are not using his true name to shield him from retaliation.
“Their theft of our grain. They ruined both our property and our equipment.”
He claims that 80 percent of the tens of thousands of hectares that he farms are now occupied by Russian military, and he charges them with massive grain theft.
The moment the Russians arrived was caught on camera by CCTV at one of the company’s locations. To protect the identities of the farm owners, parts of the surroundings have been obscured.
In later video, a soldier sees a surveillance camera and fires at it, missing.
A few of the stolen grain trucks, according to Dmytro, had GPS trackers installed.
Using this information, we were able to determine that they had travelled into Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, before continuing on to Russia.
In the Crimean town of Oktyabrske, the GPS data showed that both trucks had stopped close to a storage facility that had been identified as a location for unloading and storing grain.
A group of trucks are parked in a row on the road close to the plant, as seen in a satellite image taken on June 14 of this year.
We can observe that the grain storage facility is close to a train route that leads to ports in southern Crimea or into Russia. The Z sign, which represents Russia’s invasion, appears to be painted on the roof of the storage facility’s upper level.
