DIPLOMACY * His remarks came as Washington said it saw indications Moscow was getting ready to formally annex territory it has conquered in its neighbour. They were the clearest admission yet that Russia’s war ambitions have extended over the five months of war.

ECONOMY * The European Union ordered its members to restrict their gas use by 15% until March as a precaution after President Vladimir Putin warned that Russian supplies transported to Europe via the principal pipeline could be further reduced or possibly halted.

* According to two Russian sources aware with the export strategies, Russian gas flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline are likely to resume on time on Thursday following the completion of scheduled maintenance but at a lesser capacity than before.

* Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he wanted an outline agreement on restarting Ukrainian grain exports from the Black Sea, which are now being blocked by Russian soldiers, to be placed in writing this week after meeting with Putin in Tehran.
