US President Joe Biden has told Russia not to use chemical or tactical nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine.

During an interview with CBS News, Mr. Biden said that this kind of action would “change the face of war in a way that hasn’t happened since World War II.”

He wouldn’t say what the US would do if these kinds of weapons were used.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in February, President Vladimir Putin put the country’s nuclear forces on “special” alert.

He told the defence chiefs that it was because the West had made “aggressive statements.”

Nuclear weapons have been around for almost 80 years, and many countries still see them as a security measure that keeps them safe.

The Federation of American Scientists says that Russia has about 5,977 nuclear warheads.

But it still seems unlikely that it will use these weapons.

Tactical nuclear weapons are those that can be used over short distances. “Strategic” nuclear weapons, on the other hand, can be fired over much longer distances and raise the possibility of an all-out nuclear war.
