Biden campaigned on being “open” with the press, trying to reestablish civility after years of enmity during the Trump period. His press availability has waned in his second year in office.

President Biden has given 7 one-on-one interviews in 2022. His first was a February interview with NBC’s Lester Holt. He waited four months to give an AP interview off-camera.

Biden met with Channel 12’s Yonit Levi the next month. He waited until September to do a “60 Minutes” interview with Scott Pelley.

In October, Biden spoke with CNN’s Jake Tapper, MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart, and Nexstar’s Reshad Hudson.

Since Oct. 27, he hasn’t interviewed a journalist. In his most recent TV interview, he and First Lady Jill Biden played a version of The Newlywed Game with Drew Barrymore.

Fox News contributor Joe Concha remarked, “We’ve never seen a more packaged, homogenized, protected president than Joe Biden.” His handlers fear he’ll give a tough interview.

Vice President Kamala Harris has done at least 12 interviews in 2022 with ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, and Vice News.

Biden gave friendlier interviews throughout the year, including with liberal historian Heather Cox Richardson and progressive YouTube host Brian Tyler Cohen in February, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel in June, radio hosts D.L. Hughley, Willie Moore, Jr., and Al Sharpton in November, and Barrymore this month.

The president also provided written comments to The Skimm, chatted cars with Jay Leno on CNBC, and had phone issues with NBC’s Dylan Dreyer during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

In 2022, the president gave fewer interviews than in 2021. Last year, he gave 15 interviews, including three CNN town halls.

The White House trumpets how Biden accepts spontaneous questions from reporters at events, but the president rarely holds official press conferences. According to UC Santa Barbara’s The American Presidency Project, he held five solo press conferences in 2022 and six combined press conferences in 2021.

Biden’s 11 press conferences are fewer than Trump’s 18 and Obama’s 19 in their second years in office. Biden had fewer second-year news conferences than any president since Reagan.
