Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister stated on Wednesday that although the Yemen war was coming to an end, more work remained to be done, including the restoration of a truce and the transition to a permanent ceasefire.

Speaking on a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Prince Faisal bin Farhan asserted that the eight-year conflict could only be ended through a political agreement.

Speaking on the same panel, Hans Grundberg, the UN representative for Yemen, said that while serious steps have recently been made, ending the war “will not be easy” and that mistrust still exists.

The conflict is widely seen in the region as a proxy war between Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite Iran.

Additionally, Prince Faisal urged Israel’s new administration to take serious efforts to end the Palestinian conflict.

Israel’s government, according to Prince Faisal, is sending “some signals that maybe are not conducive to that,” but he expressed optimism that it will come to understand that resolving the conflict is in both Israel’s and the region’s best interests.

After normalization agreements with the UAE and Bahrain are signed in 2020, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to pursue formal Israeli ties with Riyadh. However, Saudi Arabia has linked any such move by the Kingdom to a resolution of Palestinian statehood goals.
