Just a few weeks after the newborn girl’s suspected murder, nurse Lucy Letby allegedly sent a sympathy letter to the baby’s distraught parents, according to evidence presented in court.

She is charged with trying to kill Child I, a preterm infant, three times before being successful on her fourth attempt on October 23, 2015.

At the Countess of Chester Hospital, Ms. Letby, 33, is charged with using a feeding tube to inject air into her stomach.

She denies killing seven infants and attempting to kill ten more.

An photograph of a sympathy card Ms. Letby sent to Child I’s family in advance of her funeral on November 10 was presented to Manchester Crown Court.

The card was titled “your loved one will be remembered with many smiles”.

Inside, Ms. Letby wrote: “There are no words to make this time any easier.

“It was a real privilege to care for [Child I] and get to know you as a family – a family who always put [Child I] first and did everything possible for her.

“She will always be part of your lives and we will never forget her.

“Thinking of you today and always. Lots of love Lucy x.”

Ms. Letby ends the message by apologizing that she was unable to attend the burial.

Child I was born prematurely in August 2015 at Liverpool Women’s Hospital at a gestational age of 27 weeks, weighing in at 2 lbs. and 2 oz (970g).

Later that month, she was moved to the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Prior to killing Child I, it is claimed that Ms. Letby tried to murder the child on September 30 and on the nights of October 12 and 13.

The prosecution said that before the premature newborn passed away in the early hours of October 23, 2015, she damaged her by pumping air into her feeding line and bloodstream.

The trial goes on.
