A neonatal nurse accused of killing babies murdered one of them on her fourth attempt, according to evidence presented in court.

At the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016, 33-year-old Lucy Letby is accused of killing seven newborns and trying to kill ten more.

Ms. Letby attempted to murder Child I, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, in September and October 2015 before succeeding on October 23, according to evidence presented to jurors at Manchester Crown Court.

All allegations have been refuted by Ms. Letby.

Child I was delivered early at Liverpool Women’s Hospital in August 2015, the court was informed.

She was 27 weeks pregnant and weighed 2 lbs. 2 oz. (970g).

On August 18, 2015, the infant was brought to the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Prior to killing Child I, it is claimed that Ms. Letby tried to murder the child on September 30 and on the nights of October 12 and 13.

Child I’s mother recalled how Ms. Letby and another nurse inquired if she wanted to bathe her daughter soon after she passed away in a statement heard out in court.

She claimed that Ms. Letby had brought the bath inside and had offered to take pictures for her that she could retain.

Lucy came back in and was smiling and kept going on about how she was present at [her daughter’s] first bath and how much she loved it,” she said.

“I wished she would just stop talking.

“Eventually I think she realized and stopped. It’s not something we wanted to hear.”

Earlier in her statement, she also described how she had never had “much to do with” Ms. Letby.

“She always appeared reserved and never interacted with the other parents,” Child I’s mother added.

The Hereford native Ms. Letby’s trial is still ongoing.
