President Joe Biden, fresh from a visit to Kyiv, was scheduled to reassure US allies on Tuesday that the US is fully committed to bolstering NATO’s eastern flank as the anniversary of Russia’s invasion approaches.

Biden arrived in Warsaw late Monday after a dramatic visit to Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is looking for more weaponry as Ukraine prepares for a spring offensive against Russia.

On February 24, Biden will deliver a speech rallying support for Ukraine as the conflict enters its second year with no end in sight.

He was scheduled to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda to discuss collective support for Ukraine and to thank Warsaw for assisting the US and other countries with military and humanitarian aid.

Poland has NATO’s longest border with Ukraine and has historically been the main route for weapons and refugees. According to Duda’s foreign policy adviser, the men will also discuss Poland’s security and increasing NATO resources in the country.

The visit was welcomed by ordinary Poles as well as the 2.5 million Ukrainians who have fled the conflict and are now living in Poland.

“We hope that they (the US) will increase arms shipments, that things will improve at the front, and that we will win,” said Alina Kiiko, 32, a Ukrainian living in central Warsaw.

A giant advertising screen on the Roman Dmowski roundabout in the city centre displayed the slogan “Biden, give F-16 to Ukraine” in English, referring to US fighter jets.

Warsaw resident Marian Switala, 70, said he hoped “that this conflict will somehow be resolved and there will be peace in Ukraine and the surrounding area”.
