Russian parliament votes to suspend nuclear arms treaty
Russia‘s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, has decided to withdraw from the New Start nuclear arms pact with the United States.
Putin introduced the bill Friday night, shortly after announcing Russia’s intention to withdraw from the treaty in a state of the nation speech.
New Start is Russia and America’s final remaining nuclear weapons control deal. It was signed in 2010 by two former presidents, Barack Obama, and Dmitry Medvedev, and was intended to prevent nuclear war.
The Federation Council, Russia’s upper chamber of parliament, will gather later today to vote on the bill.
Washington accused Moscow last month of breaking the New Start deal by refusing to allow inspections on its territory.
