President Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine will not give up on the beleaguered town of Bakhmut in the country’s east despite Moscow’s soldiers continuing their assault against what the Ukrainian leader has referred to as a “fortress.”

At a conference with EU leaders in Kyiv on Friday, Zelenskyy promised that Ukrainian forces would maintain control of the fiercely contested town in the Donetsk region for as long as possible. The town has been at the epicenter of combat for months.

“No one will surrender Bakhmut. We will fight as long as we can,” Zelenskyy said, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with President of the European Council Charles Michel, who was on his second visit to Kyiv in less than three weeks, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“If weapon (deliveries) are accelerated – namely long-range weapons – we will not only not withdraw from Bakhmut, we will begin to de-occupy Donbas,” Zelenskyy added, referring to the eastern region comprised of the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces.

Moscow claims that Russian forces are struggling to seize control of a road that is also a crucial supply route for Ukrainian forces and are encircling Bakhmut from numerous angles.

At the conclusion of a two-day visit to Kyiv by many high-ranking European Union officials, Zelenskyy made defiant remarks about the conflict for Bakhmut and demanded that his nation join the regional union right now.
