Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, Pakistan’s emerging role as a mediator between the two sides is gaining increasing international recognition.

According to Turkey’s state broadcaster TRT World, Pakistan has positioned itself as a credible and discreet diplomatic channel during the recent crisis, adopting what it described as a quiet, structured and results-oriented approach compared to other regional stakeholders.

The report highlighted that Pakistan’s engagement has been largely based on backchannel diplomacy, with Field Marshal Asim Munir playing a notable role in maintaining communication lines between Washington and Tehran during a sensitive phase.

It added that his approach reflects a preference for low-profile diplomacy focused on outcomes rather than public positioning.

TRT World stated that Pakistan’s relevance in the evolving regional landscape is supported by its geographic location, strategic relationships, and long-standing ties with both the United States and Iran. These factors, it noted, have enabled Islamabad to maintain a balancing position amid competing regional interests.

The report further observed that Pakistan continues to engage actively with key global and regional powers, including China, Gulf states, Turkey, Iran and the United States, strengthening its profile as a multi-aligned diplomatic actor in a fragmented geopolitical environment.

It also linked Pakistan’s growing diplomatic visibility to recent regional developments, including heightened tensions with India and expanded defence cooperation with Gulf partners, which have collectively contributed to strengthening its regional standing.

On the security front, the report noted Pakistan’s firm counterterrorism stance along its western border, stating that sustained action against militancy is increasingly viewed as a prerequisite for credible regional diplomacy and economic integration.

Concluding its assessment, TRT World said Pakistan’s diplomatic strength lies in its ability to maintain balance across competing blocs rather than align with any single power, while cautioning that long-term influence will depend on economic stability and internal resilience.
