Thousands of Sikhs from throughout the European Union (EU) congregated in Brescia, Italy, to participate in the EU phase of the global Khalistan referendum demanding Punjab’s separation from India.

Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), an international Sikh advocacy group, has been organising the Khalistan Referendum movement, which has drawn thousands of Sikhs to the UK, Geneva, and now Italy.

The referendum on Khalistan will be held on Sunday at Brixia Forum, Via Caprera, 5 25125 Brescia (BS), but Sikhs marched in the historic Nagarkirtan Parade to commemorate Vaisakhi and demand an independent state of Khalistan for millions of Sikhs.

According to Sikhs For Justice, Italy has over 200,000 Sikhs who are active members of the Italian population, which is why this city was chosen for the march and referendum.

Sikhs’ enthusiastic participation in the Nagarkirtan Parade, according to Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Attorney at Law (NY) General Counsel to SFJ, demonstrated their desire and demand for independence from Indian occupation in order to live in the free land of Khalistan, where they will live under the teachings of their gurus.

“Under international law and the UN Charter, Sikhs have a clear case for the right to self-determination on the grounds that they have a separate identity,” said Dr Bakhshish Singh Sandhu, President Council of Khalistan, Washington, DC.

Persecution of Sikhs for supporting the Khalistan referendum campaign has increased under Prime Minister Modi, with hundreds being prosecuted, incarcerated, and tortured under colonial-era sedition laws.

“Khalistan referendum is a lawful and democratic campaign since the use of ballot is the most legitimate and peaceful technique to discover the will of the people on a political matter,” Sikhs For Justice UK Coordinator Dupinderjit Singh said. Sikhs have the right to vote in a referendum on the topic of Punjab’s continued and future connection with India under the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

The first-ever non-governmental referendum on the topic of “whether Indian-governed Punjab should be an independent country” is being held under the supervision of the independent Punjab Referendum Commission (PRC), which is made up of world-renowned non-aligned independence referendum specialists.

The commission’s mission is to ensure that the voting and polling procedures for the Khalistan referendum are transparent, legitimate, and follow best practises.
