The US government reveal the names of killed soldiers in Jordan attack
On Sunday, the US government unveiled the identities of three troops who succumbed to an enemy drone attack in Jordan. Sgt William Jerome Rivers, 46, Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, lost their lives when a drone struck their housing unit. The US has attributed responsibility to Iranian-backed groups, with the Pentagon noting that the attack bore the “footprints” of Kataib Hezbollah. Additionally, the Pentagon emphasized that the US is not seeking a war with Iran.
“We don’t seek war, but we will take action, and respond to attacks on our forces,” said Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh.
The official specified that it was a “type of Shahed drone,” a one-way attack drone Iran has been supplying to Russia.
Iran has refuted accusations from the US and Britain, alleging its support for militant groups held responsible for the strike.
The Pentagon disclosed that the three soldiers killed on Sunday morning belonged to an army reserve unit stationed at Fort Moore in the state of Georgia.
Lt Gen Jody Daniels, Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General of the US Army Reserve Command, honored the fallen soldiers in a tribute.
“On behalf of the Army Reserve, I share in the sorrow felt by their friends, family, and loved ones. Their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten, and we are committed to supporting those left behind in the wake of this tragedy”, said Gen Daniels.
The drone attack occurred in Rukban, northeastern Jordan, near the Syrian border, and US officials later identified the base as Tower 22. Over 40 military personnel sustained injuries when the unmanned aerial system targeted the container housing unit on Sunday morning.
US officials reported that they turned off the air defense system features at Tower 22 during the attack because a US drone was returning simultaneously. Troops at the air base were in their sleeping quarters at the time of the drone strike, receiving little to no warning.
Iran has denied involvement in supporting groups suspected of carrying out the attack. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, stated that Iran was not involved in the decision-making of resistance groups regarding how they choose to defend Palestinians or their own countries. Iran’s Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib mentioned that regional armed groups aligned with Iran respond to “American aggressors” at their discretion.
US President Joe Biden asserted that the US would hold all those responsible accountable at a time and in a manner of their choosing. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin pledged to take all necessary actions in response to the attack on American forces.
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh attributed the attack to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-backed militia and highlighted the “footprints” of the Iraq-based militant group Kataib Hezbollah.
