In a major political development, the “Supreme Court of Pakistan has overturned the July 12, 2024 ruling” that had granted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) reserved seats in national and provincial assemblies. The court restored the earlier decision of the “Peshawar High Court”, siding with the “Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)”.

With this decision, “PTI has been officially deprived of 77 reserved seats”, which will now be allocated to the ruling coalition, including the “PML-N, PPP, and other allied parties”.

The court, in a “7-5 majority decision”, declared the previous “eight-judge bench verdict null and void”. Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail maintained his earlier stance on 39 seats, while Justices Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Hasan Azhar Rizvi accepted the review petitions conditionally and suggested sending the seat allocation matter to the ECP.

The breakdown of the 77 restored reserved seats is as follows:

  • National Assembly: 19 women’s seats and 3 minority seats
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly: 21 women’s seats and 4 minority seats
  • Punjab Assembly: 24 women’s seats and 3 minority seats
  • Sindh Assembly: 2 women’s seats and 1 minority seat

This ruling is a major blow to PTI’s parliamentary strength and a significant win for the current government alliance.
